The Liver, Detoxification & Your Hormones (Part 1)

Why should you care about detoxification?
  1. We are constantly exposed to toxins both externally and internally.
  2. Toxins create irritation and other harmful effects within the body which undermine health.
  3. Luckily, we have a built-in detoxification system (it works 24/7) but it can become overburdened and lose the ability to function effectively.
  4. When we aren’t able to effectively detoxify and remove harmful toxins, chemicals and other byproducts, we develop symptoms, hormone imbalance, illness and disease.

Many of us are experiencing symptoms of toxic overload on a regular basis:

  • Respiratory problems, asthmas, sinus problems
  • Unexplained headaches, back or joint pain
  • Allergies and sensitivities
  • Hormone imbalance, irritability, PMS, diminished sex drive
  • Depression, anxiety, foggy thinking, learning disorders
  • Digestive issues, adult acne, psoriasis
  • Low energy, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia
  • Weight gain – especially hips/stomach (related to estrogen detox)
  • Inability to lose weight, even with diet and exercise.

Unfortunately, these symptoms are often thought of as normal and are treated with medication which adds further to toxicity within the body.

The average women is exposed to hundreds of chemicals EVERY day!

  • Prescription drugs, antibiotics, hormones in water

Toxins and chemicals in our daily environment have been linked to:
Menstrual irregularities, estrogen dominance symptoms, endometriosis, miscarriage, birth defects, low sperm count, infertility, respiratory conditions, skin irritations/rashes, headaches, nervous system issues, mental disorders, Alzheimer’s, lowered metabolism, obesity, thyroid dysfunction and cancer.

Of particular importance are EDC’s – endocrine disrupting compounds –  these compounds disrupt normal endocrine function by mimicking naturally occurring hormones such as estrogens, androgens and thyroid hormones.  This makes the body think it has MORE hormone than it really does leading to hormone excess symptoms.

EDC’s have been linked to early puberty, impaired immune function, breast and endometrial cancer, birth deformities, obesity and metabolism disorders. They are fat soluble, so they circulate but if they aren’t detoxified, they get stored in your body fat.  In fact, EDC’s are considered “obesogens” which means chemicals that increase obesity.

Xenoestrogens are EDC’s that mimick estrogen causing high estrogen and high estrogen symptoms in  women AND men.  Some of the most common and problematic synthetic xenoestrogens include: Birth control pills, dioxin, BPA, phthalates, parabens, pesticides, chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone, benzophenone and PABA.

Luckily we have a built in detoxification system that helps break down and remove these harmful products from our body.  And the star of the detoxification show is THE LIVER.
