Walking Barefoot – for a healthier and happier life

When was the last time you kicked off your shoes and walked barefoot?

It’s something I LOVE to do because of how it makes me feel. And with a growing body of scientific research revealing many health benefits, it’s something we should all be doing regularly!

The practice of walking barefoot on a natural surface like soil, grass or sand is known as “earthing” or “grounding” creates direct contact between our body and the electrons in the earth, which have a natural charge, has positive effects on our hearth. Walking barefoot or being in contact with the earth can increase antioxidants, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, ease pain, and much more.

Studies have shown that earthing can alter brain activity and neurological function to calm the nervous system, balance hormones, improve sleep and reduce inflammation and pain. Connecting to the earth improves our skin’s ability to conduct electricity which can moderate our heart rate variability, improve blood flow and circulation supporting cardiovascular health.

Barefoot walking does indeed provide many benefits, but let’s not forget that any time we spend in nature (barefoot or not) the greater health benefits we take advantage of.

Taking regular walks outside boosts both our physical and mental health. Walking, especially outside, improves cardiovascular health, supports metabolic health, enhances blood oxygenation, circulation, boosts neurologic function and promotes healthy immune response. Walking in nature is FREE and offers the added bonuses of fresh air, sunshine and scenery.

In our busy, stressful lives, taking time to get outside for a walk has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood and promotes emotional well being. Walking creates a natural rhythm in our body with each step. Rather than a rushed or intense workout, walking is more gentle and nourishing, allowing time to relax, reflect and rejuvenate. Walking outside triggers the release of endorphins, our natural “feel good” hormones.

We were designed to stayed connected to the earth and nature around us and most of us would agree that we “feel good” when we spend time outside. But our modern lifestyles have distanced us from this natural connection.

It’s time to reconnect to the healthy power of the earth. So kick off your shoes, get outside and embrace the benefits of barefoot walking in nature!
